It's not often that Trump will sit down for an interview. So when he agreed to be interviewed by British journalist Piers Morgan for UK channel ITV, it drew a lot of attention.
People weren't exactly hopeful that Morgan, who says he is friends with the president, would ask the tough questions that America wants answering.
However, to his credit, he did ask the president one question we'd all like to know the answer to: Do you believe in climate change?
It was a simple question and it demands the simple answer: "yes". To expand upon that, he could say he agrees with the consensus of the majority of scientists, that climate change is real and that it is due to human activities.
However, Trump's answer wasn't simple. In fact, it was downright bizarre.
"There is a cooling and there is a heating. I mean, look, it used to not be climate change, it used to be global warming, right? That wasn't working too well because it was getting cold all over the place. The ice caps were going to melt, they were going to be gone by now but now they're setting records," Trump started.
For the record, global temperatures have consistently gone up over time. The last decade has been the warmest since records began.
"I tell you what I believe in – clean air, I believe in crystal-clear, beautiful water, I believe in just having good cleanliness and all."
People were unimpressed.
Unfortunately, rather than ask follow-up questions such as "so how do you square your policy on coal with believing in clean air" or "what the hell are you talking about?" Piers dropped this line of questioning altogether. Instead, he offered him a soccer shirt and found out whether he tweets in bed.
During the interview, however, Trump did offer some hope for the planet. When asked, he reiterated that he could take America back into the Paris agreement if he could get a better deal for the United States.
“If somebody said go back into the Paris accord, it would have to be a completely different deal because we had a horrible deal. As usual, they took advantage of the US,” Trump told Morgan.
When pressed about the change of heart, it appeared that it could be because he likes French president Emmanuel Macron, rather than any change in policy. Le sigh.
