A Californian teenager called Hailey had quite the encounter this past weekend. She faced off with a mama bear and two cubs walking on the wall at the side of her house, rescuing several dogs that were barking at the wild animal – proving conclusively that small dogs have no idea of their size and would literally go face anything with no concerns about their safety.
The whole episode was recorded by a home security camera and shared on TikTok by Brenda, Hayley’s cousin, where it quickly gained viral fame. Hailey was ok, although she sprained her finger rescuing the dogs, and one of the dogs probably had a few scratches but they were also ok. The bears were fine too.
Despite this encounter resulting in no harm for anyone involved, let us stress that you should never approach a brown bear – let alone attack. Bear attacks, especially towards humans, are rare and the animals are usually just concerned about their food, their cubs, and their space. Be aware of what to do in case you meet such an animal.
Also, the bear in this case was a brown bear, not a grizzly as it has been claimed on social media. Grizzlies are part of the brown bear family, but not all brown bears are grizzlies. Just recently, an opinion poll said that six percent of US women and seven percent of US men believe they can beat a grizzly bear in unarmed combat. Hailey almost proved them right…
