In the video below, this adult bottlenose dolphin tries to revive its dead calf in the waters off the coast of Italy.

Researchers from the nonprofit conservation and research organization Oceanomare Delphis uploaded the video to YouTube this month. They believe the adult bottlenose may be the calf’s mother but the reason for the calf’s death is unknown.

 

 

Researchers have shown that dolphins can mourn the death of a loved one. It’s strange to think animals grieve. However, there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that animals can mourn the loss of another.
