In a move set to make humpback and sperm whale puns irresistible, PornHub has announced its new program to help save the whales.
To celebrate World Whale Day on February 13, PornHub has pledged to donate 1 cent for every 2,000 videos viewed on their site between February 8 to 29. All the proceeds will go towards the non-profit cetacean conservation group The Moclips Cetological Society (MCS).
The site receives over 60 million visitors a day, so all those pennies should be rolling in by the end of the month. In a statement, PornHub also announced that visitors will be able to see an active tracking counter on their homepage, which displays the amount of cash that's being gathered in real-time “as folks look to blow their loads for a good cause.” With current figures, the total should reach about $27,000.
"Humans are not the only mammals that engage in sexual activities for reasons other than procreation," said Ken Balcomb, president of MCS, in a statement.
"Cetaceans – whales, dolphins and porpoises – are very sexual animals and have evolved a variety of fascinating social life histories beyond simple procreation. Although our primary goal is to ensure effective conservation of cetacean species, our academic goal is to educate the public about their social and biological lifestyles that readers might find very interesting," he added.
Of course, saving the whales is a very serious business, with many species' (yes, including sperm whales) conservation statuses remaining listed as vulnerable. So, maybe it’s time to do your bit for the whales...
