A close encounter. Michelle Feis/YouTube.

This is the amazing moment that a pod of killer whales whizzed around a kayak and its occupants near San Juan Island in Washington.

In the incredible video, one of the animals swims right under the kayak, while the others make their way past. The kayakers, understandably, are ecstatic with excitement and some shock as well.

“We had no idea the whales were in the waters so close to us when we headed out; this was simply great timing plus pure luck,” one of the kayakers, Michelle Feis, who was with a guide at the time, wrote on YouTube.

She said there seemed to be about 30 killer whales (which, confusingly, are actually dolphins) in total, and added: “This was seriously one of the most amazing days of my life. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I'll treasure forever.”
