A recent project by Kenyan wildlife trusts has brought together the unlikely alliances of turtles, GoPro cameras, and live-streaming apps.

As part of the #KenyaLive project, HerdTracker and Make It Kenya live-streamed a video of a green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) being returned to the sea

The turtle was originally caught accidentally in a trawler net belonging to fishermen from the town of Watamu, Kenya. On Sunday, after a few days of rehabilitation, the turtle returned back to the Indian Ocean with a GoPro camera attached to the top of its shell. This footage from the shell-mounted camera was then broadcasted on the Twitter-owned live video streaming app Periscope.

The #KenyaLive initiative hopes to bring conservation into the information age, using all the latest technology and social media channels to promote interest in the issues facing Kenyan wildlife. From January 7 to 18 , they produced daily live broadcasts, most of which you can view here.

You can watch the full report of the “Turtlecam” on the BBC News website.
