"Yoink!" CSIRO/YouTube

This footage comes from the CSIRO marine research vessel RV Investigator, which is currently studying and surveying Australia’s water territories. Being Australia, the ship’s cameras come across their fair share of nature – both beautiful and terrifying.

The video below shows a squid pouncing onto a line attached to an instrument used for the ship's research at a depth of around 139 meters (456 feet). CSIRO told IFLScience: "When the equipment is being calibrated it tends to attract some inquisitive, and sometimes aggressive, squid!" Suddenly, in a matter of milliseconds, the squid is snatched off the line by an even bigger squid, who swims off with it into the deep blue sea.

Nature is incredible, even when it looks like a hasty bouncer trying to kick a drunk guy out of a bar.

Edited 26/04/2017: We originally reported the line was baited. In fact, it was simply a line attached to a piece of equipment.
