The US has broken another COVID record as 1,083,948 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the United States in a single day – January 3, 2022. This is the highest ever number for any country since the start of the pandemic. The previous record (about 590,000) was set by the United States, just four days ago.

The data from yesterday could include lags from tests conducted over Christmas and the New Year. That said, experts point out that many Americans are now conducting self-testing at home, so the real number might be higher than this.

The Omicron Variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has been responsible for this new wave of cases globally. With waning immunity and a better ability to evade just that, the Omicron variant has spread like wildfire, especially among the unvaccinated.

In the US, only about 62 percent of the population are fully vaccinated against the disease, and just about a third have received a booster vaccine.
