What On Earth Happened To This Bear's Tongue?!

Nyan htoo, meaning "bright", is a bear in Myanmar whose tongue grew so big he could barely hold it up on his own. Vets from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh spent 4 hours trying to surgically restore the tongue back to it's original size. So what could possibly have caused this?
