This is the computer simulation on display at Auckland Museum, which portrays an underwater volcano erupting off the coast of New Zealand's largest city. The video is closely tied to work by researcher Colin Wilson, a volcanologist who studies eruptions such as these. His work, which looks closely at volcanoes' progress from being dormant to erupting, is helping us to establish systems to detect and respond to potential future eruptions which might be similar to this simulation. He was recently awarded the Rutherford Medal, New Zealand's top research honor, for his work.
