Although the persistent myth that snakes dislocate their jaw is completely untrue, the way they actually manage to swallow things so much larger than themselves is still pretty incredible; unlike mammal jaws' that are built for chewing and ripping, a snakes jaw is not connected by bone, but by a complex network of tendons, muscles and ligaments that give them their flexibility and allow them to swallow prey considerably larger than themselves.
