You may think humor is a uniquely human characteristic, however it seems our hominid cousins may also enjoy a good laugh, too.

In this video – filmed by Dan Zaleski from Meriden, Connecticut, at Barcelona Zoo – an orangutan appears to double-over in a fit of laughter after watching a simple sleight-of-hand magic trick.

While it may be unclear what exactly the ape is cracking up about, there has been a fair amount of studies on the role of laughter and humor in social communication among apes and monkeys. In addition, there’s anecdotal evidence of Koko the Gorilla using sign language to crack her own jokes, such as tying her trainer’s shoe laces together then making the signal to “chase.”
