The curse of Mondays is unavoidable. It's so strong, it seems, even the craftiest and most cunning creatures of the animal kingdom cannot escape it.

Last Monday, this not-so-fantastic-Mr Fox was found dangling upside from the bush, just a whisker away from the water, on the Hythe Military Canal in Kent, UK. How it got there or what it was trying to do is anyone’s guess.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), the UK's leading animal welfare charity, came to the rescue after the fox was spotted by a local passerby. They sailed down the river on their mission to save the fox with the help of a council worker’s boat. Thankfully, the fox was in surprisingly good shape even though it had been hanging there for some time. After a quick check-up from an animal collection officer, they even were able to release it into the wild that same day.

“I guess the fox had gone across the tree, not releasing the tree was actually hanging over the canal,” Attila Desics, animal collection officer for the RSPCA, said in a statement.

“He’d managed to get himself totally wedged by his back legs in the branches and as a result was just hanging down head first with his nose literally a few inches from the water. I am pretty certain if he’d have stuck his tongue out he could have had a drink from the canal.”

"Once we got near him I was able to get a grasper around his body and pull him onto the boat and pop him in a basket. By this point, there was quite a crowd gathering so once I got him they all gave a cheer from the other side of the canal!"

“This fox was an extremely feisty fella despite his ordeal. I checked him over and once he managed to get the circulation back into his legs I released him back to the wild.”

“This was certainly one of the most unusual rescues I have done… It certainly wasn’t your normal start to a Monday morning!”
