Californian couple Carlee Leifkes and Lucas Unger pride themselves on being nontraditional, so it’s perhaps not a surprise they didn’t opt for the conventional diamond engagement ring. And what could be more unconventional than a ring made out of one of your future hubby’s wisdom teeth?

The pair met at a Canadian music festival earlier this year and Lucas Unger popped the question this weekend on Halloween. After Unger’s dad mailed them a wisdom tooth that he had removed when he was younger, the pair went to a jewelers to craft a truly unique ring.

Speaking to Buzzfeed News, Carlee Leifkes said: “When we’d spoken about it, I’d said that diamonds are so overrated. My birthstone is a diamond. I don’t need one to prove how much someone loves me. He’d already moved all the way from Canada to do that!

“What does a diamond signify in anybody’s relationship? I literally have my husband’s wisdom on my finger.”

The couple will be married in Vegas later this year by an Elvis impersonator.

Human tooth jewelry may seem gross or maybe even a quirky new fad, however, there’s actually a long history of human tooth jewelry. Prince Albert once gave his beloved wife, Queen Victoria, a gold thistle-shaped brooch with the milk tooth of their daughter embedded in the top. To add even more sentiment to the brooch, apparently Prince Albert pulled the tooth himself from his daughter when she was just 7.
