A lot of the time it seems like the general public is unaware of how scientists spend their average day. This is particularly evident when it comes to stock photographers, with some particularly hilarious results.

Dr Kit Chapman of Falmouth University began a competition for the worst scientific stock photos ever last week, which went viral largely because of how funny the stock photos are.

Among many strange and delightful entrants were photos of scientists staring intently at a chicken, and a photo by a photographer who is under the impression that science is something you do in your negligee.

The public voted in their droves, in several knockout polls, eventually narrowing the contest down to just four images.

In the end, it was the soldering iron that won, beating the syringe chicken and thumbs-up man in the grand finale.
