A slew of celebrities have been opening up about their experiences with Covid-19. And hey, as a lot of people don't seem to take it seriously until somebody they know gets it, we're all for it.
The latest to talk more about their own experience with the virus is Tom Hanks. The much-loved actor was one of the first celebrities to tell the world about their coronavirus diagnosis while in Australia back in March. He's since spoken of the discomfort he and his wife, actor and songwriter Rita Wilson, went through with the illness.
"Our discomfort because of the virus was pretty much done in two weeks and we had very different reactions," he told The Guardian. "My wife lost her sense of taste and smell, she had severe nausea, she had a much higher fever than I did. I just had crippling body aches, I was very fatigued all the time and I couldn’t concentrate on anything for more than about 12 minutes. That last bit is kinda like my natural state anyway."
Now in an interview promoting his new movie Greyhound he has made his feelings clear on people who refuse to follow the guidelines on social distancing and wearing a mask.
"I don't get it, I simply do not get it, it is literally the least you can do," he told the Associated Press. "I wouldn't trust them with a driver's license. I mean, when you drive a car you've got to obey speed limits, you've got to use your turn signals, you've got to avoid hitting pedestrians. If you can't do those three things then I get it – you shouldn't be driving a car.
"If you can't wear a mask, wash your hands, and social distance I've got no respect for you, man. I don't buy your argument."
In a seperate interview with Today he put it more bluntly.
"I think a huge majority of Americans get it. Look, there's no law against ignorance. It's not illegal to have opinions that are wrong. But I think you flout a lot of realities when two and two don't add up to four," he said.
"There is a darkness on the edge of town here, folks. And let's not confuse the fact: It's killing people."
The actor – who has type 2 diabetes and a stent in his heart – spent three days in hospital with his wife, who survived cancer.
“I don't want to dismiss our symptoms, we felt rotten,” Hanks said in the interview with Today. “I had body aches. Crippling, cracking body aches," though he stressed that he wasn't worried during his stay.
"The Australian officials put us in the hospital, and they kept very strict attention on our fevers because if they had spiked, we were going to be in trouble; our lungs, because if they had filled up or scarred we were going to be in trouble; and the levels of our oxygen.”
