Grimes and Elon Musk have welcomed a second child to planet Earth and, once again, gave the baby an appropriately geeky name: Exa Dark Sideræl Musk.
The birth of the baby girl was recently revealed in a Vanity Fair with Grimes this week. During the interview, the Canadian artist was discussing her new music when the journalist overheard a baby crying upstairs. The interviewer asked: “Do you have another baby in your life, Grimes?”
She was initially hesitant to reveal the child, saying “I’m not at liberty to speak on these things.” However, she later confirmed that she and Musk recently had a second child via surrogate.
Musk and Grimes had their first child, called X Æ A-12 and nicknamed “X”, in May 2020. Their second baby has the full name Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, nicknamed “Y”.
Grimes told Vanity Fair that Exa is a reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, which describes the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second.
Dark is, apparently, a reference to the unknown and “the beautiful mystery” of dark matter – coincidentally, Grimes has previously released a song titled My Name Is Dark.
Sideræl is intended to be “a more elven” spelling of sidereal, a timekeeping system that astronomers use to locate celestial objects, and a hat tip to her favorite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel.
Grimes tweeted out the article saying “Thank you so much. Vanity Fair for putting me on the cover!!!!” However, she added:" 2 clarify a few things; I did this to speak abt my work, not 'reveal all' haha. Def held back a lot, contrary 2 headline. & didn’t mean for them 2 find out about my daughter so please respect her privacy as I’d love her to be able to live as private of a life as possible.”
She continued: “Me and E [Elon] have broken up *again* since the writing of this article haha, but he’s my best friend and the love of my life, and my life and art are forever dedicated to The Mission now.”
According to Grimes, the “Mission” is centered around “sustainable energy, multiplanetary species. The preservation of consciousness.”
Within this wild ride of an interview, Grimes also casually mentions her plans to live and die on Mars. I guess that is what you can expect if you enter an on-again-off-again relationship with Elon Musk…
