Back in April, Trump signed a bill to repeal internet privacy restrictions. The bill overturns a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rule that required Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to get your permission before selling your data.

This means that your service provider (e.g. Comcast, Charter or AT&T) can sell your browsing history to other companies, without you even knowing it’s happening.

Meanwhile, over in the UK, the government have passed the Investigatory Powers Act. This law allows government agencies to access huge amounts of personal data. It was called “the most extreme surveillance in the history of Western democracy” by former NSA employee Edward Snowden, adding "it goes farther than many autocracies."

So now that governments are no longer protecting you, what can you do to secure your own privacy online?

In short, you need a VPN.

If you value your privacy, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) gives you an encrypted connection to the internet. It makes it much more difficult for anyone see what you’re doing online, and allows you to access sites and content blocked in your own country. If you were in China, for example, using a VPN you would be able to access Facebook, which is currently blocked by the Chinese Government. You could be safe in the knowledge that the Chinese government could not see what sites you were accessing, or the data you were sending online.
