Motorists in Thailand and Poland have just filmed a particularly cool addition to this bursting catalogue of crazy dashcam footage. And no, not an angry motorist or a drunken misadventure.
Dashcams over the past few days, both in Thailand and in Poland, have caught footage of a bright green fireball cruising across the sky. Although similar, it's definitely not the same fireball.
Several drivers caught the sight in Thailand at around 9 p.m. local time last night, around the Bangkok area. In Poland, the green flash was seen, aptly, on Halloween just after 6 p.m. local time. The International Meteor Association said they received 60 reports about the European fireball, with some sightings even reported in the Netherlands, Sweden and Austria.
The Earth’s skies are currently amid the Taurid Meteor Showers, which are notorious for their fireballs – and that’s what these incredible green flashes are. Fireballs are simply defined as a very bright meteor (with a really cool name). It’s loosely considered that if a meteor is brighter than the planet Venus appears in the sky, it can be defined as a fireball.
But what caused the green? That shows that the meteor is likely to contain some kind of metal. Fireballs that have a high amount of nickel or magnesium burn with this vibrant bluey-green glow.
