Facebook has announced it will be building its fifth data center to add to its growing fleet of data centers around the world.
Running entirely on renewable energy, the data center joins those in Iowa, North Carolina, Oregon and Sweden.
The news was announced on the data center’s Facebook page. According to Ken Patchett, director of data center operations, it will be “one of the most advanced, efficient, and sustainable data centers in the world.”
The data center’s plans are impressive: Instead of having air conditioning, the center will keep cool using outdoor air, which will hopefully keep everyone cool even in the Texas heat. The center will be powered by a 200MW wind energy plant less than 100 miles away, located on a 17,000-acre site in Clay County.
And the good eggs of Facebook will pump excess energy generated by the plant right back into the local grid.
