The human body is a complex thing, and even doctors don't know about all of it. Hell, dentists even stop at the chin. 200,000 years after homo sapiens emerged, we're still learning of surprise new organs we didn't know about inside the human head, so don't feel bad if you don't know everything – nobody really does.
That said, some misconceptions about the human body can be slightly amusing, such as a couple a while back who couldn't get pregnant for years, only to be told that this was because they had been having anal sex the whole time, which – famously – will not result in a baby.
The medical professionals of Reddit have been sharing misconceptions that their patients have had about the body, which range from quite funny, quite dangerous, to just plain depressing. Here follow a few of the best.
"I had to explain to a pregnant woman once that the baby is coming out of her vagina," one person wrote. "She was almost six months pregnant and was horrified, I think she thought all babies were just C- sectioned out."
Another shared the story of their mother, who couldn't figure out that if she got a brain transplant it wouldn't be her mind in there anymore.
One slightly worrying anecdote was about a nurse.
"I had to help another nurse put a foley catheter in (a sterile tube that drains urine from the bladder)," they wrote. "She (newer nurse) had been trying to put the catheter into the patient's clit. Needless to say, the nurse was confused and the patient was confused as well. When I put the catheter into her urethra (obviously not her clit) it felt much worse for the patient than what had previously been going on."
Another told of a patient who came into hospital complaining of a "severe pain in her thigh". After extensive scans and checks on her thigh came back clear, it became apparent that she thought her thigh was a part of her arm.
"They later found out she had A BULLET in her arm but that it had hit her from behind, so it couldn’t be seen when she laid down on her back."
It also turns out the anal sex/pregnancy misconception isn't just isolated to one person.
