Maybe we shouldn’t be allowing AI to come up with our flirting tricks, after all. Image Credit: Andrey_Popov/Shutterstock.com

Do you typically have rubbish luck chatting people up? Maybe, as science tells us, your flirting game is simply not up to scratch. If, after trying everything from online to speed dating, you really are struggling to find a mate, you might need to brush up on your pickup lines – and boy do we have the answer for you.

In a new blog post, AI master Janelle Shane has outlined some AI that truly have the gift of the gab, creating pickup lines that are ready to be used for whatever cheeky occasion. Well, not quite – many of them are hilariously bad.

Using a neural net, a bunch of training data, and a language model produced by OpenAI called GPT-3, Janelle used four variants that produced pickup lines based on a prompt article headline. The headline was similar to a standard pickup line article on the internet, titled “These are the top pickup lines of 2021! Amaze your crush and get results! 1.” The AI then had to create pickup lines it believed would be included in the following article.

The four variants used were called DaVinci, Curie, Babbage, and Ada. Each had varying sizes of neural network, thus making them either more or less competent at creating pickup lines. DaVinci, the largest AI, created gems such as:

  • I love you. I don’t care if you’re a doggo in a trenchcoat.
  • I will briefly summarize the plot of Back to the Future II for you.

Frankly, DaVinci is on to something – I would love for someone to summarize Back to the Future II for me.

If you think these are bad, it goes downhill pretty fast.

Babbage produced lines such as:

  • I Love You, I Love You, I Love You To The confines of death and disease, the legions of earth rejoices. Woe be to the world!
  • Butterfly (Hop on one leg)

Unfortunately, Ada was less interested in finding a match, instead falling deep into the pits of madness and attempting to sell you some bargain deals:

  • Funny Nifty Sweaters – $15.99→
  • Limit to 1 purchase in stores

To find all the hilarious lines, check out Janelle’s blog, where she regularly posts about ‘AI Weirdness’ and popular internet topics.

AI has come a long way in recent years, but there have certainly been some speedbumps along the road. DaVinci and co are reminiscent of an AI that created small quotes to go on the sherbet sweets Love Hearts, but many of them were...not quite romantic. Beautiful examples included "Balls", "All Hail The Chicken" and "Mouthy Hamster". Alternatively, AI was recently employed to create a theatrical play, but it quickly devolved into some pretty NSFW scenes. For some reason, no matter how lovey-dovey you try to make them, AI appear to become either sinister or downright sexual – maybe we shouldn’t be allowing AI to come up with our flirting tricks, after all.
