Scientists are not the dry dorks they're portrayed as in countless movies by writers who clearly took arts degrees. In fact, even when writing serious scientific papers it appears they can't resist dropping in a pun.

Scientists are now sharing the best paper titles they've come across, and they're great. From the classy "Medical marijuana: Can't we all just get a bong?" to the not quite so classy butt joke "getting to the bottom of anal evolution", most of them are pretty funny. Good work, science.

It all kicked off when post-doc researcher Lisa Stinson shared her favorite title: "Fantastic yeasts and where to find them: the hidden diversity of dimorphic fungal pathogens."

It wasn't the only pop culture reference, with one person drawing attention to what sounds like the perfect Snakes on a Plane sequel.

-

And this reference to a sex film.

-

And these ones from Lord of the Rings / fantasy fans.

-

The rest were (largely) a glorious selection of puns, wonderfully bizarre titles, and far too many more butt jokes. Enjoy some of our favorites below.
