It may not be the most seductive way to set the mood for a night of passion, but sending pulses of magnetic stimulation through certain parts of your brain can increase your sex drive, according to a new study in the journal PLOS One. If nothing else, it goes to show that science really is an aphrodisiac.

Researchers used a technique called theta burst stimulation (TBS) to control the activity of a brain region called the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex – which is wired up to the brain’s reward centers – in 20 volunteers. When TBS is applied continuously, it increases a type of brainwave called alpha waves, resulting in lowered feelings of pleasure, while intermittent TBS decreases alpha waves and enhances sensations.

The team wanted to know if this pathway could be used to control libido in people with unusually high or low sexual appetites. Participants therefore received either continuous or intermittent TBS, before taking part in a raunchy game in which their genitals were connected to electronic vibrators, which would become active for varying lengths of time depending on how well players performed in the task.

In the moments before vibration began, when players were expecting to be pleasured, the researchers scanned their brain activity in order to determine their levels of arousal.

As expected, they found that intermittent TBS produced an increase in activity in the brain’s pleasure regions during this period of sexual anticipation, while continuous TBS had the opposite effect. Over the following weekend, participants were asked to report how many orgasms they experienced, either through sex or masturbation, and once again those that had received intermittent TBS enjoyed more sexual pleasure.

The study authors therefore conclude that TBS can be used to moderate lust in people with sexual desire problems, and can be tailored to make them either more or less horny as appropriate.
