Oh Elon, you so crazy. schrodude/Instagram

Remember when Elon Musk made that hilarious joke? You know, the one about the “boring company”, and how he wanted to start digging tunnels.

Well, the joke is continuing, although now it seems the SpaceX and Tesla CEO has actually built a machine to dig tunnels. The venture is called, yes, The Boring Company.

This all began in a tweet back in December, when Musk tweeted about being stuck in traffic. He said he wanted to build a tunnel boring machine and start digging.

-

Then in February, he posted a picture of an experimental tunnel at SpaceX’s headquarters in Los Angeles, hinting that this might tie in with his Hyperloop idea for super-fast transport.

-

Now, some SpaceX employees and members of the public have posted images of a boring machine bearing the company’s name. It’s a big cylindrical machine that seemingly could be used to dig a large hole.

In an interview with Bloomberg in February, Musk said he already had a boring machine nicknamed Nannie that’s 120 meters (400 feet) long and weighs 1,090 metric tonnes (1,200 tons), although it’s not clear if that is this machine.

We still don’t know what his plan is exactly. The goal seems to be relieving traffic on the roads, although we don’t know where he might be digging a tunnel, or where it would go.

For the moment, he seems to be building on private land, but if he wants to go onto public land, he’s going to need permission from the relevant authorities. Building a tunnel isn’t easy, either.

But it goes to show that if you’re a billionaire with a crazy idea, well, you can make it come to fruition. Who knows what’s next. Please, no more puns though.
