On September 20, according to a Facebook event, 1.9 million people will attempt to storm Homey Airport (KXTA), also known as Area 51. Yes, it's likely a joke, but over the last few weeks, the web has been inundated with incredible memes. Now, two American animal shelters have decided to ride the meme wave for a good cause, getting more pets in their care adopted.

OKC Animal Welfare in Oklahoma City has created foil hats for their canine guests, asking Facebook followers to "come storm our shelter" and saying "adoption isn’t that far out of this world!”

The animal shelter has raised more than $2,700 and since confirmed that some of their pets have been adopted.

The Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center in Texas is also getting in on the action and has decided to capitalize on the popularity of the Facebook event to run a campaign. The staff put puppers, kitty-cats, and even a bearded dragon in tin-foil hats, wings, and googly-eyed headbands.

“Do you want to storm Area 51 and find aliens? You can do that right here at the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center (LACAC 51),” reads the Center’s Facebook page. “We won't resist, you can take them all. Our aliens can go home with you for the best price in the galaxy. Adoption fee includes spay / neuter, microchip, and age appropriate vaccinations. No probing allowed.”

Both organizations used the apt hashtag #StormTheShelter. People are now suggesting other shelters join in on the campaign to make sure that memes are not the only thing to come out of the Area 51 facebook event.

Given that an Air Force spokesperson went on record to remind event attendees that they are "ready to protect America and its assets," perhaps people could use their collective power for a good cause instead of storming Area 51 at the risk of their lives.
