A post on Reddit has brought to the wider public's attention that global warming has gained an unusual supporter – the Flat Earth Society. In a tweet from July, the organization stated their unequivocal understanding of the reality of climate change.

To the question “Do you guys believe in climate change?”, the Flat Earth Society tweeted back: “Certainly. It would be nothing short of irresponsible to question something with so much overwhelming evidence behind it, and something that threatens us so directly as a species.”

Redditor mridulpj shared a screenshot of the tweet with the comment “I’m conflicted…” – and, well, we sympathize. Climate change is such a crucial issue that we can’t be too choosy with who is on the right side of history. As some politicians, members of the media, and corporate interests try to derail climate change mitigation, it is important that anyone with a platform raise awareness of just how crucial the next few decades are going to be.

Several commenters have raised the point that thinking the Earth is flat doesn’t really affect your everyday life, but that global warming will whether you understand the science or deny it. Others instead have pointed out how the dogmatic beliefs of “never trust experts” is what leads people to question the overwhelming evidence of global warming in the first place.

Other Redditors are of the opinion that the Flat Earth Society account is just a glorified (and Twitter verified) troll account that's there to annoy people, get retweets, and sell merchandise. Some suggest they should start a religion and continue to exploit the “true believers”.

“I bet it started as a trolling set up, but once they realized how easy and legal it was to make money off of the stupid people they just went along with it lol," Redditor xDaigon said.

There is very little known about the people who run the Flat Earth Society Twitter feed (would you publicly advertise you’re involved with that?), so it’s all speculation if they hold the ridiculous belief that the Earth is flat or if they are just in it to make a quick buck. They do follow the Banana Earth Society though, so at least they have a bit of a sense of humor.
