In 1984, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) interviewed a psychic while they used "remote viewing" to time travel to Mars one million years ago. While undergoing this surreal out-of-body-experience, the person explains their surreal vision of ancient Mars, complete with pyramid dwellings and troubled Martians facing an existential threat.
This might not sound like the typical work of a spy agency, especially in the heated last decade of the Cold War, but the 80s saw the CIA dabble with freaky psychic phenomena, "remote viewing", and the possibility that the human psyche can transcend spacetime.
The declassified document from 1984 – simply titled “Mars Exploration – details one of these bizarre forays into the unknown, in which a CIA agent interviews some kind of psychic while they “visit” Mars one million years ago during a trance. The psychic is attempting to narrate the out-of-body experience as it occurs, while the CIA agent attempts to guide the process, frequently telling them to "report the raw data" and "raw perceptions."
As this dream-like vision unfolds, the psychic claims to see unusual geological forms and pyramids across the dusty landscape of Mars. This journey across ancient Mars eventually leads the narrator to find a large group of aliens.
"I just keep seeing very large people. They appear thin and tall, but they're very large. Ah... wearing some kind of strange clothes,” the psychic says in the report.
According to the psychic, the Martians were facing some kind of environmental catastrophe. They say the Martians had built pyramid-like structures and warrens because they are planning to seek shelter from an incoming storm.
“It's like ah... strictly functional place for sleeping or, that's not a good word, hibernations, some form, I can't, I get real raw inputs, storms, savage storm, and sleeping through storms,” the report reads.
“They’re ancient people. They're ah... they're dying, it's past their time or age... They're very philosophic [sic] about it. They're looking for ah... a way to survive and they just can't.”
Some of the aliens appear to have embarked on a mission to scout out a new home, but many are still stranded on Mars, hoping to survive the ecological collapse around them.
"They're hanging on while they look or wait for something to return... They're ah... evidently was a.... a group or a party of them that went to find ah... new place to live. It's like I'm getting all kinds of overwhelming input of the.. corruption of their environment. It's failing very rapidly and this group went somewhere, like a long way to find another place to live," the psychic recalls.
Yeah, so, it’s unclear what any of this is referring to. The document is extremely sparse and contains very little information beyond the interview transcript. Needless to say, the CIA ceased their psychic operations after a 1995 report concluded that remote viewing “failed to produce the concrete, specific information valued in intelligence gathering.” Effectively, they found that this foray into the supernatural was fruitless and wholly unscientific. But hey, the reports certainly do make for some interesting and deeply eerie reading.
