It doesn’t take much to stumble across a conspiracy theory on the Internet. But nevertheless, this one is pretty funny. People are freaking out that a “time traveler” can be seen at a boxing match filmed in the mid-'90s.
The boxing match took place between Mike Tyson and Peter McNeeley in Las Vegas on August 19, 1995. In the grainy background, people have pointed out a man in the audience who looks like he's filming the match on a smartphone. Of course, camera phones weren't commercially available until 2000. Even then, the earliest camera phones were pretty clunky, not like the slimline tablet smartphones that are popular today.
However, as they point out in this video by AllThings Creepy, there were some models of camcorders at the time that could be easily confused with a smartphone, such as the Casio QV-100 or Logitech Fotoman. This was top-of-the-range technology at the time, but considering this was a legendary, high-profile boxing match, it would not have been out of place to have seen a few of these in the audience (especially if you could afford front row seats).
It’s safe to say that this is no different than, for example, the 1,500-year-old mummy that looked like it was wearing some Adidas trainers. And besides, if you did have a time machine, a boxing match 20 years ago probably wouldn’t be your first port of call.
