The Chinese city of Lanzhou has entered a strict lockdown following the report of six local cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. The city of four million now requires residents to stay at home, and only leave their homes for essential supplies and medical emergencies. Three cases were also reported in the capital, Beijing.

This comes after offline lessons for primary and high schools students were suspended yesterday. Bus and taxis services within the city have been suspended and more than 70 trains, in and out of the city, have been stopped.

The latest outbreak in the Asian country is believed to be linked to the Delta variant and the country has reported tens of cases every day over the last several days. While the numbers are comparatively low (the US and the UK have had tens of thousands of new cases daily), China has been focusing on a strict zero-COVID approach deploying lockdown and restrictions before cases become unmanageable.

The Winter Olympics, happening in just a few months, will take place in Beijing and Xingtai and the eyes of the World will be on China to see how the games will unfold, given the major restrictions seen in the Tokyo Olympic games this summer.
