A laboratory will no doubt unearth huge amounts of information during its life. However, no one thought the new nanotechnology lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) would start its mission of discovery before it was even built.

Please sign in or subscribe to access the full content.Beneath the ground that used to house the MIT’s Compton Laboratories, builders discovered a time capsule labeled “Do not open until 2957 AD.” Obviously, they decided to respect this wish and leave the capsule sealed. But with a little bit of research and scouting around their film archives, they managed to unearth the story behind this glass container. Inside lies a group of documents and artifacts that express the state of science, education and technology in 1957, when the capsule was first buried.
