476 Live Webcast: Giant Asteroid Will Eclipse Regulus
NASA/JPL-Caltech

At 2 am EDT (0600 GMT) on Thursday, March 20, the view of the star Regulus will be completely obstructed by a large asteroid. Regulus is located about 78 light-years away in the constellation Leo, and is one of the brightest stars in the sky. Those living in certain parts of Ontario and New York will be able to see the 73-kilometer-wide asteroid 163 Erigone completely hide the star for up to 14 seconds. For those who won’t be able to see the star get blotted out of the sky themselves, you can view the event online, courtesy of a live feed from the Slooh Space Camera.

Coverage of the event will begin at 1:45 am EDT here:

In the meantime, you can learn more about the event here:

This is the predicted path of Erigone's shadow. The shadow is expected to travel along the green line, with those living inside the blue lines having the best chance of witnessing the event. Those living inside the red lines might be able to see the shadow. Those living outside this region or those that cannot view the event because of cloud cover can check out Slooh's live webcast.
