If we have learned anything from the Internet, it is that pets are really weird and humans find this very funny. So, without further ado, here are the winners of the first-ever Comedy Pet Photography Awards.
The grand prize was snatched by Nando Harmsen from the Netherlands (image above) who managed to catch a photo of his horse enjoying an oddly graceful skip across a field. The whole collection of winners (below) are equally as hilarious and just waiting to become the basis of many memes to come.
It might only be their first year, but the competition received over 2,500 entries from at least 73 countries from around the world, including the Philippines, Mexico, Uganda, Kazakhstan, and New Zealand. This competition comes on the heels of the Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards, which has been running since 2015 and continues to grow in absurdity and brilliance each year. Both projects are the brainchild of nature photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks MBE and Tom Sullam.
Tom Sullam, African landscape photographer and founder of the awards, said: “Although some images had been shot on smartphones most of them were sharp and well composed and, as photographers, both Paul and I were thrilled to see so much quality from entrants using non-professional photographic equipment!”
On top of the laughs, the awards also have a more serious message to help promote a love for animals and nature. It should also serve as some inspiration to pick up a camera, whether it's just a smartphone or a DSLR, and head out to the wild (or just your backyard).
“The competition is aimed at raising animal welfare awareness, but also to enjoy photography and get people out photographing, and we feel the competition achieved this,” added Sullam.
