In the mean streets of urban India, locals have been treated to an unique display of friendship.

A rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) appears to have taken in an abandoned puppy in Erode, Tamil Nadu in southern India.

While these primates are a notoriously sociable species, sometimes hanging out in troops of over 200 individuals, this level of closeness between macaques and other species is unheard of.

The monkey has been seen picking fleas from the puppy and clutching it as they climb from tree to tree. Locals have been providing food to the unlikely pair, which the monkey insists on feeding to the puppy before eating itself.

Although, the monkey has been seen feeding grapes to the puppy, which probably isn’t a good idea seeing as they’re toxic to dogs. We suppose it's the thought that counts.
