In Chinese culture, waterspouts are called “dragon sucking water” – and it’s pretty easy to see how they got such a cool name. This incredible footage from China shows some waterspouts in all their glory.

Three local residents filmed the numerous waterspouts on their phones just off the coast of Dalian, a city found in the Liaoning Province of northeast China. The footage was shown on China Central Television. To give you a sense of scale, these waterspouts were several kilometers out at sea.

Waterspouts are essentially a tornado that occurs over a warm body of water. In the past, it’s been reported that they can cause “raining fish” by whipping fish, frogs and even turtles out of the water.
