Christian Orthodox bishop Neophytos Masouras of Morphou has recently presented his own theory for why there are gay people in the world: gay children are born because pregnant mothers enjoy anal sex and pass on the desire to their unborn child.
The comments were originally made by the bishop in June while speaking at a primary school in Akaki, Cyprus. He claimed, as reported by the Cyprus Mail, that "it [homosexuality] is a problem, which is usually transmitted by parents to the child." He has recently doubled down on the claims, saying it's in the teachings of Saint Porphyrios. He even provided a biological mechanism for it: mothers pass on their enjoyment of anal sex because it gets absorbed into the DNA of the fetus.
His theory, however, holds no scientific merit. A mother's enjoyment of anal sex will have nothing to do a child's or whether or not they are gay. The argument has more logical holes than a colander. For one, it's important to note that not every gay man enjoys anal sex, either as a top or as a bottom. Even with that issue aside, how would he then explain lesbians? Or bisexual people? Or how some straight men like to be pegged by their girlfriends? Bishop Neophytos hasn’t done his homework.
Homosexual behavior is extremely common in nature. It has been observed in hundreds of species across the animal kingdom, none of which seem to be particularly bothered by it. On the other hand, same-sex attraction for humans is a topic that has never ceased to be discussed and has led to the systematic oppression and countless deaths of LGBTQ+ people.
The origin of homosexuality generates a lot of curiosity and, for the most part, there is a genuine and positive interest in understanding how this trait has evolved. There is some concern over how new genetic revelations may be used not to understand how human variations came to be but to further criminalize LGBT+ people in countries where it is illegal. This might seem like a pessimistic view, but conversion therapy, which is a form of torture, is still legal in 41 states.
