AI Tool Turns Your Drawings Into Horrifying Portraits

Oh god. Pix2Pix

If you’ve ever wanted to tap into your darkest nightmares, you’re in luck. A new neural network project called Pix2Pix lets you turn your drawings into creatures of horror.

The tool was developed by Dutch Public Broadcaster NPO. Using artificial intelligence, it attempts to turn your drawings of a face (or whatever you want) into a re-creation of one of its presenters, Lara Rense.

And the results are, well, terrifying. While it makes valiant attempts to guess where the eyes, ear, mouth, hair, and so on should go, it’s not always exactly on the money.

Hundreds of drawings and photographs of Rense were collected by NPO’s listeners to feed into the artificial intelligent system. Using the tool, it then tries to match your attempts to Rense, making some watercolor-esque paintings.

Make it stop. Pix2Pix

The idea seems to be based on edges2cats, which was a similar artificially intelligent system developed earlier this year. Using Google’s open-source machine-learning project Tensorflow, Christopher Hesse developed the project, which was just as freaky as this latest iteration.

You can try out Pix2Pix here, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.
